Government

The use of satellite images and DEMs as information tools help governments plan better for emergencies and crises, classify land use, identify and extract changing features of the landscape. Satellite images are customarily used to identify disaster-struck areas, such as oil spills, toxic waste dumping, landslides or floods. These current images help regulatory bodies identify, plan and take action in the shortest time possible. Historical satellite images can form the base for which governments can plan efficient evacuation routes for reference by a wide range of stakeholders, from government agencies to rescue workers, insurance companies and rebuilders. It also served as a comparison to show the degree of destruction.  The government can rely on satellite images to track community growth, plan land use and calculate tax assessment based on land parcels.  This visual imagery afforded by satellite images and DEMs also act as an innovative way to share information with the public. For instance, satellite images can be made available online via portals to engage public community participation and increase public awareness. Satellite images and DEMs are also constructive policy analysis tools. They provide non-biased (“real earth”), accurate and near real-time information to aid the policy analysis and decision making process.
